Item Factors affecting academic performance of pupils in universal primary education (UPE) schools in Uganda(South Asian Journal of Development Research, 2020) Okello, Joseph; Angol, Daniel; Mwesigwa, DavidThis study focused on factors affecting the academic performance of pupils in UPE schools since pupils are central in the educational process. Four questions were answered, namely: what is the effect of institutional leadership on the performance of pupils in UPE schools? What effect do political factors have on the performance of pupils in UPE schools? What effect do socio-cultural factors have on the performance of pupils and how does parents’ involvement affect the performance of pupils? Secondary data were analysed using a document review analysis and it is revealed that school leaders such as school management committees and the head teachers who are equipped with leadership skills have an effect on the academic excellence of pupils; political factors exhibited through fulfilment of responsibility from the state and the district authorities affect academic performance of pupils in UPE schools. However, lack of government commitment, in terms of limited allocation of resources to schools in rural areas affects the performance of learners. Finally, selected cultural factors such as gender preference, early marriages, unplanned pregnancies, child labour and female genital mutilation (FGM) have a negative impact on the performance of pupils in UPE schools. Therefore, the involvement of parents in facilitating education of their children is presented as a contributory factor in attaining better academic performance in UPE schools. It is recommended that parents should participate in key school activities such as meetings with teachers.Item The Role of Police in the Promotion of Peace and Justice in Lango Sub-Region: A Case Study of Lira City(Lira University, 2022) Okello, Joseph; Oryang, Alex ChonoBackground: The study investigated the contribution of the police institution in the promotion of peace and justice among the people of Lira City. Conclusion: The study concluded that the police institutions play a significant role in promoting peace and justice in Lira City. Recommendations: The study recommended that to reduce fighting in the public, the police should strengthen their daily patrol at all points in Lira City by the use of motorized and foot patrol, bringing a permanent end to organized criminal gangs in the region through improving on its intelligence and technology with appropriate skilling of its officers that facilitate easy crime detection and empowering the public to remain vigilant against terrorism acts by collaborating with the Local Government Authorities at the grass root levels. The police institution should improve on its intelligence and technology with appropriate skilling of its officers that facilitate easy crime detection. This should be re-enforced with support from other relevant institutions such as Judiciary and Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development (MGLSD) in sensitizing the community on issues of the laws and its interpretations and community policing. The key objective was to examine the effect of crime prevention in the promotion of peace and justice among urban dwellers in Lira City. The study adopted a descriptive and correlational design. Data was collected through both selfadministered questionnaires and individual interviews and analyzed using mean and standard deviations. The findings suggest that crime deterrence is not significant in promoting peace and justice while community policing has a significant contribution in promoting peace and justice in Lira city. It was concluded that if crime deterrence can be enforced fully by the police institutions, it can play a substantial part in promoting peace and justice in Lira City. It is encouraged that to reduce the various crimes in the urban centers, the police should strengthen their deterrence rather than arrest through improving on its intelligence and technology with appropriate skilling of its officers that facilitate easy crime detection and empowering the public to remain vigilant against terrorism acts by collaborating with the Local Government Authorities and mainstreams sensitization on terrorisms in the different Local Government activities at the grass root levels.
